Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Alabama Poultry and Egg Association Records consists of 2 linear feet of material that span the years 1945-1983. The records are divided into four series and arranged chronologiclly. The bulk of the collection consists of te Board of Directors records and Alabama poultry industry publications. Series I consists of one foulder containg historical sketches of APEA, ca. 1965 and ca. 1972. Series II consists of the records of the Board of Directors, 1953-1980,for the Alabama Poultry Industry Association (APIA) 1953-1972, and the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association (APEA) 1972-present. These records, one linear foot, contain the organization's constitution and by-laws, board meeting workbooks 1965-1969, and board meetings minutes 1969-1980. The workbooks contain prepatory information for the board members and board meetings, such as meeting agendas, minutes of the previous meeting, membership reports, publicity material, etc. All workbooks and minutes are arranged chronologiclly. Series III contains the annual reports for the APIA 1953-1972 and the APEA 1973-1980. The bulk of the reports are from 1967-1980 with one report for the year 1953. Series IV consists of Alabama poultry news magazines1945-1983; "Alabama Poultry Cooperative News", 1945-1947; "Alabama Poultry Industry News", 1953-1964; and the "Alabama Poultry Newsmagazine", 1983.

Biographical / Historical

Note on Publications-- "ALABAMA Poultry Cooperative Nes" began in 1945 as the official journal of the Alabama Poultry Cooperative, itself created in January 1945 after poultrymen at annual Alabama Farm Bureau meeting in previous October voted to form the organization. W.L. Walsh of Montgomery served as secretary-treasurer of the association and editor of the magazine (quarterly). This collection includes issues for years July/August 1945- May 1947. It is not known when publication was stopped. R.B.D. Library has no issues. "Alabama Poultry Industry News" began in 1952 [Fall?] as the official journal of the Alabama Poultry Industry Association which held its first convention in June 1953. This quarterly, too, was edited by W. L. Walsh, who was also secretary-treasurer of the APIA. This collection includes issues for the years September 1953-- Fall/Winter 1964, with some issues missing. The quarterly ceased publication in 1964. R.B.D. Library has issues from 1957-1964. "Alabama Poultry Newsmagazine" began publication in May 1983 as the official quarterly of the Alabama Poltry & Egg Association. "Alabama Poultry Jubilee" began in 1967 as the official progeram for the Alabama Poultry Industry Association annual fund-raising banquet. It also included statisitcs on the growth of the industry. "APIA Annual Report" supplanted the Jubilee program in 1972. It became the Alabama Poultry & Egg Association "Annual Report" in 1973 before it was discontinued after the 1980 issue.
