 File — Box: 1-2, Folder: 3

Scope and Contents

From the Accession:

The Alabama Republican Party Papers contain material concerning many phases of a political party's life: fundraising, candidates and campaigns, conventions, elections, legal actions, executive committee activivity, and youth group activity. The bulk of the material is coorespondence, although the collection includes audio-visual materials and newspaper clippings also. The collection spans the years 1928-1977, but the major portion of them and the most informative records span the years 1962-1967 and 1969-1973. Record before 1962 consist of contributors' correspondence (1959-1961), state convention information (1954-1962), and a nwespaper clipping file concerning state and county party activities beginning 1928. The clippiings are an excellent source of information about party leaders and conventions in a time period where the party's history is all but unknown. Party records for the 1967-1969 period accuratly reflect the downgrading of the party organization in that period. For the years 1962-1967 and 1969-1971, the records are fairly complete on most phases of the party life. Especially interesting are the attorney's papers, convention (all levels) information, election analysis, and Republican and Democratic candidates and elected officials material. The large amount of material from the 1964 Republican National Convention, especially the Platform Committee, reflects the role Alabama Republican Party held in 1964. The attorneys' papers detail legal actions concerned with re-apportionment and efforts to hold a state Republican primary election. During the Nixon years, the party records include White House and National Party correspondence and press releases. The records of the Young Republican Federation of ALabama detail its growing state-wide involvement from 1965-1971. Because party activities often have no ridged outlines, and because they often overlap eachother, the index and organizational guide for the records should be consulted before using the box and folder inventory. In some cases the individual folder title cannot reflect the folder contents completly. For example, the party chairman's correspondence contains information on all phases of party life. The campaign folders may contain information on many campign activities, including those of individual candidates.
