Biographical / Historical
The ATMA is the oldest trade organization in Alabama, founded in 1901 as the Alabama Cotton Manufaturers Association. Beginning in 1938, a permanent staff was employed by the ACMA. Prior to that, mill officials themselves performed all necissary duties. Active membership is through company affiliation with individual executives representing memebr firms. Through committee and annual meetings, the organization promotes safety programs, spinning and weaving contests, and cotton production improvement programs. In 1958, the organization adopted its present name, the Alabama Textile Manufaturers Association. ATMA membership includes ninety-six percent of Alabama textile mills, which by 1985 was the largest employer in the state with over 100,000 workers. Currently, the ATMA provides a framework the industry and the associated businesses to achieve mutual goals. The ATMA also provides guidance for the textile industry in dealing with governmental and industrial problems.
