Scope and Contents

From the Accession:

This accession contains four series: Writings, Correspondence, Speeches and Events, and Miscellaneous items. There is also one box of oversize materials.

The writings are mostly undated drafts of stories that appear in her published works.

The correspondence series contains a great deal of general and professional correspondence as well as three large sets of letters to and from her son and literary agent. The first, to her son who was away at school, describes the area around Selma in the midst of the Civil Rights upheaval in 1962-1964. The second, also to her son who served in the legal division of the Army in Vietnam describes the situation at home during the Vietnam War, mostly in 1969. The third is correspondence between Brown in Alabama and her literary agent in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s.

The speeches series contains drafts of speeches that Brown delivered to mostly writing events and awards ceremonies since her first publication in 1986.

Finally, there is a miscellaneous series that contains information on various other activities of Brown and numerous personal notebooks filled with notes about particular stories.
