Biographical / Historical
Mary Van Antwerp was a respected photographer. She began her photographic career as a hobbyist but became a serious photographer whose career spanned over 25 years. Her photographs have been honored by the National Geographic Society and are hanging in various museums including the Alabama Museum of Tourism and Commerce in Montgomery and a museum in Rostov-on-Don, Russia.
The photograph depicts an African-American couple named Robert and Rabbit. Van Antwerp befriended the couple in the 1940s. They lived in Washington County, Alabama, near Bilbo Creek.
