CD of Charles B. Dupree’s Powerpoint Presentation on John Augustus Walker, 2011
Scope and Contents
This accession consists of material collected by Charles B. Dupree documenting the works of Mobile artist John Augustus Walker. Walker completed a ten-mural “Historical Panorama of Alabama Agriculture” depicting the history of agriculture in Alabama as part of the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project, a program employing artists during the Great Depression. These murals appeared at the 1939 Alabama State Fair in Birmingham before being stored away at Auburn University and temporarily forgotten. Upon the rediscovery of these murals in 2006, Dupree gave lectures and created exhibits to share these works of art with the public. The items in this accession include copies of artwork, magazines, newsletters, notes, presentation material, correspondence, and articles. Although most of this material dates from 2006-2014, it does include photocopies of John Augustus Walker’s correspondence and sketches from 1935-1941.
