Scope and Contents

This accession includes 6 handwritten letters, 22 total pages, dated 1862 to 1863, written by 4th Sergeant William H. Gardiner to his sweetheart, Carrie Patterson who lives in Belfast, Maine, during the war. Also included is a manuscript pass, dated August 13, 1862, for him to visit Belfast, Maine. He writes letters from the battlefields: October 4, 1862; Camp in the Field, Point of Rocks, Maryland: 4 pages with excellent description of a 500 mile march... captured 4 of White's Cavalry (Rebels)...September 6, 1862; Near Fort Lyons Virginia (Alexandria): He tells of hard fighting and gives the losses in his company.
