Biographical / Historical

Ward Sykes Allen was born in Nashville, Tennessee on July 10, 1922. He received his bachelor's degree in 1947, his master's in 1949 and his doctorate in 1963, all from Vanderbilt University. He was an assistant professor of English at Mississippi College for Women from 1957 to 1961, an instructor at Vanderbilt University from 1962 to 1964 and a professor of English (later Hargis Professor of English Literature) at Auburn University from 1964 to 1987. He was a Guggenheim Fellow from 1972-1973. He retired as a professor emeritus in 1987.
