Biographical / Historical

Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity was founded in Richmond, Virginia by Otis Allan Glazebrook, a nineteen-year-old former Confederate soldier, on September 11, 1865. His goal was to establish an organization that could aid in reuniting the young men of the entire nation in friendship. Alpha Tau Omega became the twenty-first fraternity founded in the United States. Membership was restricted to white males, elected by ballot and by unanimous vote. The Auburn Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega, Alpha Epsilon, was founded on December 18, 1879 by Ignatius Chandler. It was the seventh chapter of the fraternity, and is the oldest continuous fraternity at Auburn University. The objectives of Alpha Epsilon were to develop a spirit of loyalty to the college and to promote the social, educational, cultural, and spiritual development of its members.
