Scope and Contents
This collection contains an unpublished manuscript by Richard E. Amacher entitled “From Moses to Montesquieu: Antislavery Rhetoric in Early America, 1688-1808” in its entirety, newspaper clippings, book reviews, correspondence, academic articles, and scholarly publications pertaining to Dr. Richard E. Amacher’s career.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Richard E. Amacher was a Professor of English focusing on colonial American literature and drama who spent the majority of his teaching career at Auburn University. Amacher was born in Pennsylvania in 1917. He earned his A. B. from Ohio University in 1939, attended the University of Chicago from 1939-1942, and received a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1947. In 1953 Dr. Amacher married Cordelia Anne Ward and the couple had one child. After teaching for short periods of time at other universities, Dr. Amacher joined the Auburn University English Department in 1957 where he taught until his retirement in 1984. Over the course of his life Dr. Amacher was involved in the Presbyterian Church and was also an active musician wh played in numerous city orchestras. Dr. Amacher died in February 2015.
