Correspondence (1938-1969), manuscripts and speech materials, newspaper clippings, photographs, programs and other documents of R. G. Arnold's careers with American Farm Bureau (Southern Regional Director, 1937-1957)and the Alabama Cooperative Extention Service (as Community Development Specialist, 1957-1962).

Scope and Contents

The Riley G. Arnold Papers document the activities of his career in the Alabama Extention Service from 1957 to 1962 and in the American Farm Bureau Federation from 1938 to 1957. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs (including one taken with Walter L. Randolph, President of the Alabama Farm Bureau Federation from 1940-1961), membership statistics, speech manuscripts of Arnold and other Farm Bureau officials, leaflets, materials concerning training schools and proceedings of the American Farm Bureau Institute. There was no organization to the collection when recieved. The material is organized by folder title. Biographical / Historical

When the Smith-Lever Act established the Alabama Extention Service (AES) in 1914, Riley Gilbert Arnold (1892-1982) began his lifetime career of organizing farmers throughout the South. After spending some time in Mississippi, Arnoldserved as Southern organizational director for the American Farm Bureau Federation from 1937-1957. Until his retirement in 1962, he worked with the AES as community development specialtist. An orator known for his humor, Arnold was a welcom guest at Farm Bureau activities throughout the South.
