Auburn Chamber of Commerce Records

Scope and Contents

The materials on the Auburn Chamber of Commerce include manuscript, photographs, a tape interview, and a pamphlet collection housed with the collection. The collection contains many documents describing Chamber projects and activities. Correspondence records are rather complete beginning around 1965. The major weakness of the collection is the fact that most of the material dates from the mid-sixties and does not document early Chamber activities. Some financial records and newsletters are included but are not as complete as would be desired. Membership lists and the numerous newspaper clippings found in the collection would probably be of great help in researching the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. Some information that is not found in the documents is included in the taped interview with Mrs. Bette Wegener, Manager of the Auburn Chamber. The tape should be consulted for such information as Chamber leadership, activities, and future goals.

Biographical / Historical

The Auburn Chamber of Commerce began active affiliation with the National Chamber Chamber in 1949. At the present time the Chamber consists of about one hundred fifty-five members which is approximately one third of the city's merchants. The Chamber leadership is composed of a group of fifteen to twenty-one volunteer members who compuse the Board of Directors. These volunteers meet monthly in Board meetings to discuss the organization's activities and approve Chamber policy. The Chamber's only meeting of the total membership is at the annual banquet. Presently the Auburn Chamber is deserving of special attention as both the President and Manager of the Auburn Chamber are women. The Chamber is basically a service organization in the community. The Auburn Chamber workes closely with the university and city providing useful information and assistance to newcomers to the area. The Chamber is also active in soliciting new businesses into the area such as the Falk Company. National projects such as the teaching of economics in local high schools have been advocated by the local Chamber. The plans for the future include a face lifting project in the downtown business district. This would include construction of new sidewalks and the removal of power poles in the business area.
