Biographical / Historical

The Auburn University music department traces its roots to the 1890s, when a small group of students organized a drum corps. In 1899 this group became an officially recognized band with the appointment of Thomas G. Fullan as the first band director. At this time the band mainly gave performances at campus military and sporting events. Music courses gradually grew more numerous on campus. The department of music became organized in 1945 as part of the School of Architecture and the Arts. Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) began offering the Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1953, which became a Bachelor of Music degree in 1961. Throughout its history the bands of the music department have been an integral part of campus and community events. Students in the music department today may participate in numerous ensembles while earning undergraduate and graduate degrees.
