Biographical / Historical

Paula R. Backscheider earned a Ph.D. in eighteenth century English Restoration Literature from Purdue University in 1972. She served as a professor at Rollins College and the University of Rochester before joining the Auburn University English Department as a Philpott-Stevens Eminent Scholar. She has written several books on eighteenth century English literature, including a biography of Daniel Defoe.
