Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials spanning the entire career of Dr. Wilford S. Bailey. These documents include materials from the beginning of his career as a veterinary pathology professor and researcher at Auburn, to his interim presidency, to his presidency of the NCAA, to his work on his book Athletics and Academe. The bulk of this collection is materials pertaining to Dr. Bailey's teaching and research and his time as President of the NCAA.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Bailey was born in 1921 in Sommerville, Alabama. He earned his D.V.M.in 1942 and M.S. in 1946 from A.P.I. In 1950 he earned his Sc.D. from John Hopkins University. He first began teaching as am instructor at the A.P.I School of Veterinary Medecine in 1942. From the time until his retirement from Auburn University in 1992, he held several teaching and administrative position, including interim president from 1983 to 1984. He was also involved in the NCAA, serving as its president from 1987 to 1988.
