Content Description
This collections consists of two accessions. Accession 98-078 contains correspondence, sermons, speeches, photographs, pamphlets, family recollections, personal writings, newspaper clippings, published materials, one artifact, and other materials. These materials arranged in four series: Annie Douglas Mitchell, Rush Family, Nimrod D. Denson Jr, and Miscellaneous. Accession 96-35 contains essays, a poem, correspondence between John W. Rush and his wife, Octavia O. Rush (including letters from Civil War campsites and Johnson's Island prison camp), other correspondence, and miscellaneous items.

Biographical / Historical
John Wesley Rush (1833-1905) was a Methodist minister and son-in-law of bishop James Osgood Andrew. He raised a company of troops for the Confederacy, surrendered at Island Number 10, was imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio, and was discharged from service upon his parole in 1862. He served several Methodist churches in south Alabama during his career as a minister. Annie Douglas Mitchell was the daughter of Emily Elizabeth Rush Mitchell (a daughter of John Wesley Rush). Nimrod Davis Denson, Jr., an attorney in Lee County, Alabama, married Annie Elizabeth Rush, daughter of Charles Andrew Rush (a son of John Wesley Rush).
