Biographical / Historical

Anne Bell George was born in Montgomery, Alabama on December 4, 1929 and raised in Lowndes County. Bell attended Judson College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Spanish in 1949. For twenty-three years she taught English to both junior high and high school students in Birmingham and Jefferson County, Alabama. In 1971, she received a Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. After retiring from teaching she founded the Druid Press in 1982. In 1984, she became associated with the Artist in Education Program and later became writer-in-residence for the Alabama State Council on the Arts. During the early 1900's, she attended the University of Alabama in an effort to attain her doctorate in English and Education. Before her death on March 14, 2001, George published over a dozen books and close to one hundred poems.
