Bowling Family Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains news clippings, correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, broadsides, and pamphlets. Half of the material concerns William Bismarck Bowling and his interest in Alabama politics, mainly Alabama's prohibition campaign of 1909 and the ratification of the 1901 State Constitution. The other half of the collection concerns George R. Bowling, Sr.'s time as a cadet at Alabama Polytechnic Institute and his subsequent involvement in the Class of 1917 class reunions.

Biographical / Historical
William B. Bowling was born near Iran City, Alabama in 1870. He worked as a teacher in Montgomery, Alabama, and Columbus, Georgia, from 1893 to 1899. In 1900 he moved to LaFayette, Alabama, to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1900. He served as solicitor of the fifth circut court of Alabama from 1905 to 1920. During this same time he also served on the A.P.I. Board of Trustees. In 1920, he was appointed to a vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, serving until 1928 when he was appointed judge for the fifth circut of Alabama. He remained in that office until his death in 1946.
