Biographical / Historical
George Henry Cooke served as a naval surgeon for the United States Navy during the American Civil War. After the war he remained in the Navy and served aboard numerous vessels in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. He is perhaps best remembered as a member of Ulysses S. Grant’s medical team during the president’s extended tour around the world following his term in office.
