Scope and Contents
This accession consists of material related to two individuals: Marshall P. Bush and his mother, June Frazier Johnston. It includes newspaper clippings, a program for the Winston-Salem Soap Box Derby (in which Marshall Bush competed), a trophy awarded to Marshall Bush by Eddie Rickenbacker, Bush’s obituary, photographs, a booklet about June Johnston and her artwork, and two narratives written by Johnston.

Biographical / Historical
Marshall P. Bush was born in the late 1940s to June F. Bush and James E. Bush. When his mother remarried in 1956, her new husband adopted her son and changed his name to Marshall Johnston. In 1959 he competed in the Winston-Salem Soap Box Derby and was awarded a trophy by Eddie Rickenbacker, the famous World War I pilot. Marshall Bush Johnston died in 1971 at the age of 22 from injuries sustained in a car accident.
