Scope and Contents

Accession 11-066 contains financial ledgers and cattle herd record books from the Caley farm, dating from the 1910s to the 1940s. Also included are various essays, poems, and songs written by Albert Caley from the 1930s to the 1970s. There are also various newsclippings and letters relating to the history of the Caley and Scoville families, records of the Marion Junction Homemakers Club, and bulletins from Marion Junction United Methodist Church, and well as a booklet on the Sheldon and Pauline Pigg Scoville Family Scholarship at Sue Bennett College.

Accession 85-43 consists of three boxes containing material from around the turn of the century to the mid-1970s. Box 1 contains Mr. Caley's writings, specifically his unpublished manuscripts, and newspaper clippings of various sorts. Box 2 contains correspondence and material related to the management of the Caley family farm. Box 3 contains miscellaneous material pertaining to Mr. Caley and items relating to Mrs. Caley, especially dealing with her education and work with the home demonstration club.

Biographical / Historical

Albert Francis Caley was born January 27, 1884 in Lorraine County, Ohio. He married Helen Scoville, daughter of Sheldon and Pauline Pigg Scoville, an alumna of Sue Bennett College, and a native of Kentucky, on June 14, 1911. The couple had three children, Marshall S. Caley, Albert F. Caley, Jr., and Mabel Caley Kelley Carlton. In 1920, the Caleys moved to a farm in Marion Junction, Alabama, near Selma. In addition to being a farmer, Albert Caley wrote a variety of unpublished stories, essays, poems, and songs, as well as letters that were published in various newspapers and magazines. The Caleys were active in Marion Junction United Methodist Church, as well as other community organizations. Albert F. Caley died December 27, 1975.
