Trudy Cargile Papers
Scope and Contents
This accession consists of material documenting the life and career of Gertrude “Trudy” Cargile including three scrapbooks, loose newspaper clippings, photographs, an obituary, and a eulogy. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, and other memorabilia. Trudy Cargile made these scrapbooks herself. After her death, a family friend gave these items to the Auburn University Office of Communications and Marketing so that... a staff member could nominate Cargile for the Alabama Press Association Hall of Honor. The Office of Communications and Marketing then donated this material to Special Collections and Archives.

Biographical / Historical
Gertrude “Trudy” Cargile was born in Fayette County, Alabama, in 1923. After graduating from Fayette County High School, Cargile began a long and distinguished career in journalism. She first worked for Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in the business office. From there Cargile moved on to write newspaper articles for the Montgomery Advertiser and Birmingham News. After gaining ten years of newspaper experience, Cargile returned... to Auburn University to work as editor of the News Bureau. She retired in 1984 as Editor Emeritus. Cargile died in 2006.
