Biographical / Historical

The Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities is the outreach office of the Auburn Univerity College of Liberal Arts. The Center's goal is to strengthen the bonds between the academic community, the arts, and the general public by developing and offering programs in schools, towns, and communities around the state.

The Center was established by the university in 1985, and received its first National Endowment for the Humanities grant in 1988. "Read Alabama!", the largest grant of its kind awarded in the state at the time, focused on nineteenth and twentieth century Alabama writers in public, library-based, scholar-led programs. In 2007 the Center was named in honor of Caroline Marshall Draughon, wife of Auburn University president Ralph Brown Draughon.

The Center is located in Auburn in the historic 1847 Scott-Yarbrough House, commonly known as Pebble Hill. In 1974, the Yarbrough family sold the property to the Auburn Heritage Association. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. In 1985 the property was donated to Auburn University. In 2015 Pebble Hill was renovated and expanded with a new building to provide event space.
