The Committee for the Preservation of Auburn's African American History (CPAAAH) was formed in the 1990s in response to members'concerns that historical contributions of the area's black residents were being ignored. The committee also argued that Auburn's black heritage risked being forgotten if action was not taken. Committee members compiled evidence from both written and oral sources, solicited help from prominent historians, edited the manuscript and published a book in 2011.
