Biographical / Historical
The Auburn Alumni Association formally adopted a constitution in 1882 but was active several years prior to this. The association elected its first president in 1896 when Charles C. Thach took up the post. In 1912, Alumni President Thomas Bragg advocated a more formal organization for the association and started organizing alumni clubs throughout the country. That year also saw the publication of the first issue of the alumni magazine, The Auburn Alumni Quarterly, later renamed the Alumnews, and finally Auburn Magazine in 1990. The association funded the construction of buildings, such as the 1916 Alumni Gymnasium, endowed professorship chairs, and awarded scholarships. The Alumni Association later changed its name to “Alumni and Development” as it began concentrating more heavily on fundraising and strengthening the network of Auburn University alumni. The Alumni Association and Office of Development are two separate entities with the Alumni Association reaching out to Auburn University graduates and the Office of Development working solely on raising money and processing donations.
