Scope and Contents

This collection contains audio cassette tapes and typed transcripts of two interviews conducted by Dr. Wayne Flynt with Auburn University President William V. Muse as well as articles written by Muse relating to his experiences at Auburn University. Muse discusses his struggles with the Auburn University Board of Trustees over the issues of university governance. Topics discussed in the interviews include academics, college athletics, and Alabama politics. Interviews took place on April 6th, 2001 and on June 28th, 2001.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. William Vann Muse served as chancellor and president of Auburn University from 1992-2001. Muse was born April 7, 1939 in Marks, Mississippi. He received a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Arkansas in 1966. Before coming to Auburn Muse served as president of the University of Akron (Ohio) from 1984-1992.

Dr. J. Wayne Flynt (born October 4, 2004) is Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of History at Auburn University and taught history at Auburn since 1978 until his retirement in 2005.
