Coplan Family Papers
Scope and Contents
Contains materials relating to the life of Morris Coplan and his son Benjamin J. Coplan. The bulk of the collection relates to Benjamin's life and career concerning his work on the Lister Hill Aluminum Plant in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the United States Army, various New Deal agencies, and his long career in the Civil Service Administration. This accession contains a journal about his work at Lister Hill, letters of recommendations from Harold Ickles and Hugo Black, and various certificates of commendation. Also contains materials used by Benjamin Coplan when he was a student at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, later Auburn University.

Biographical / Historical
Benjamin J. Coplan was born January 25, 1898. He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn University, in 1919 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked for the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad, the Public Works Administration, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, the United States Military, the War Assets Administration, and the General Services Administration from 1919-1966 before working as a consultant on engineering projects. He died in Washington, DC in 1981.
