Biographical / Historical
Jimmie Lee Jackson (1938-1965) was an African-American native of Marion, Alabama. On February 18, 1965, he participated in a civil rights protest in response to the jailing of a Southern Christian Leadership Conference official in Marion. Local and state policemen attacked the demonstrators. During the attack, state trooper James Bonard Fowler shot Jackson in the stomach. Jackson died eight days later, on February 26. His death was a key impetus for the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march that resulted in violence in Selma on March 7.
