Correspondence (1924-1987), including letters from Stephens Gaillard Croom as a student at Alabama Polytechnic Institute and Harvard University, and from his World War II service; report cards, programs, bulletins and memorabilia (1924-1930) from Alabama Polytechnic Institute and Harvard University; resumes and legal documents (1941-ca. 1970); clippings (1929-1992); and photographs (1924-1930) from Alabama Polytechnic Institute and Harvard University.

Biographical / Historical
Stephens Gaillard Croom was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1906. He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Insitute, later Auburn University, in 1928, and from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1930. From 1930-1934 he was employeed by the Alabama Power Company. He became assistant engineer of the Alabama Public Service Commission in Montgomery in 1934. He married Velma Leftwich Lassiter in 1941. During World War II, he served with the counter-intelligence corps in New Orleans. He returned to Mobile after the war, and became vice-president of Baumhauer-Croom, Inc., an insrance and real estate company. During the 1960s, he helped work to bring the USS Alabama to Mobile as an historic attraction and served as secretary of the Battleship Commission from 1963-1974.

From the September 25th, 1996 addition, a photograph of Delta Sigma Phi members in 1928 was added to the AU Photograph Collection in file IVB 3736.
