Scope and Contents

This collection includes research and teaching notes, professional and personal correspondence, and various documents showcasing Dr. Kenneth W. Noe's career as a Civil War historian, history professor, nonfiction author, and active member of the academic community. Photocopies of original historical documents used in his research, such as The Memoir of Marcus Woodcock, 9th Kentucky Infantry, are also included.

This collection is open to research without restrictions except for Box 11, Folder 16. This folder is closed due to PII until the death of Ken Noe and his immediate family.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Kenneth W. Noe was born in 1957 in Richmond, Virginia. He received his B. A. from Emory and Henry College, an M.A. from Virginia Tech, an M.A. from the University of Kentucky, and his Ph.D. from the Univ. of Illinois. Noe was the recipient of multiple awards and accolades during his professional career as an American Civil War, Appalachian, and American South historian. He notably served as the Draughon Professor of Southern History at Auburn University in Alabama, President of the Alabama Historical Association, and as an advisor on the Advisory Board of the Society of Civil War Historians. He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2001.
