Biographical / Historical
Robert Eugene Lambert (1869-1942) was the husband of Agnes Hopkins Lambert (1875–1947), father of Robert Eugene Lambert Jr. (1902–1992) and James Ernest Lambert (1904–1960), and founder of the Darlington, AL, company R.E. Lambert and Sons. The company was initially established under the name Greenland's Farm in 1900. The family-owned company focused on prize-winning Polled Hereford cattle and became an influential part of Alabama's beef cattle economy. J.E. Lambert became a leader in several farming committees and organizations, including the Alabama Cattlemen's Association, Alabama's Polled Hereford Association, and the Alabama State Chamber of Commerce’s Agriculture Committee. In 1961, Auburn University dedicated its new meat laboratory, the Ernest Lambert Meats Laboratory, in memory of J.E. Lambert.
