The donors of Joanna Davenport Papers request the acknowledgement of Dr. Davenport’s intense research in the life of Miss Eleonora Sears. Dr. Davenport began her research in the early 1970s and continued until her death in 2002.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Joanna Davenport, born on January 17, 1933 in Salem, Massachusetts, devoted her life to the plight of women and concentrated on their involvement in sport. Auburn University hired Dr. Davenport, in 1976, as the first female Women’s Athletics Director and served as an Associate Professor. Dr. Davenport left Auburn University briefly to serve as the Athletic Director of Plattsburg State University of New York and also served as a Professor, but returned to Auburn University in 1987 as an Associate Professor. In the Fall Quarter of 1993, Dr. Davenport advanced to Professor and remained in the position until her retirement in 1997. Throughout Dr. Davenport’s career, she produced many scholarly works chiefly focused upon women’s athletics, women’s rights, and the Olympics.

Accession 07-020 was intially assigned to record group 1016, but was later put back with record group 805.

An olympic film titled Struggle and Triumph by Taurus Productions was discovered on June 17, 2022. The label on the case indicates it was mailed to Dr. Joanna Davenport. It was added to box eighteen of accession 07-020.
