Biographical / Historical
As of 2019, Auburn University has had 19 different presidents since its founding as East Alabama Male College in 1859. The president serves as the administrative leader of Auburn University supporting faculty and students, encouraging research, and leading outreach activities. Incoming presidents are typically recommended by a search committee and approved by the Board of Trustees. Spright Dowell was president of API (now Auburn University) from 1920 to 1928. Student and alumni discontent with his leadership forced him from office.
