Biographical / Historical

Alexander B. Meek graduated from the University of Alabama in 1833, read law, and served in some local offices before being appointed federal attorney in Mobile. Accepting a position with the Mobile Daily Register in 1848, he spent the rest of his life devoted to literary matters. His best known works are "Romantic Pages in Southwest History" (1857) and the poem "The Red Eagle." In the mid-1850s he was instrumental in the founding of Alabama's public school system.
