Biographical / Historical
The Dixie Art Colony formed in 1933 and met each year until 1948, with the exception of 1946. The artists involved met at various locations from 1933 to 1936, mostly in Central Alabama. From 1937 to 1948 the colony had a permanent site on Lake Jordan. Kelly Fitzpatrick and Sallie Carmichael organized the colony and were joined by Frank Applebee, head of the Department of Art at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University).
