Civil War Letter from "Miles"
Scope and Contents
Writing to his parents, Miles describes his experiences serving with Hilliard's Legion during the Civil War. He describes being shelled, leading cavalry to capture enemy troops and material, and meeting with old friends. He also criticizes the Confederate retreat from Kentucky.

Biographical / Historical
"Miles" served in Hilliard's Legion. His description of events and part in them indicates that he served as a Cavalry Officer. The only "Miles" recorded as having led a cavalry unit in Hilliard's Legion is Slaughter, Miles M.. Listed as a Major, he commanded Company C of Hilliard's 5th Cavalry Battalion. In all likelihood, this was Miles. On December 30th 1862, the 5th merged into the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment, where Miles would rise from Captain to Lieutenant Colonel. Census records from 1866 record a Miles M. Slaughter living in Tallapoosa, Alabama.
