Biographical / Historical
The physics department at Auburn University was created in conjunction with astronomy in 1882 and did not become a separate entity until 1902. Since that time, the department has been headed by professors Dunstan, Wootan, Allison, Carr, and Kubel. Prior to 1939 the department was located in Samford Hall. In 1940 a new building was completed, Tichenor Hall, with quarters specifically designed for teaching and research in physics. Auburn entered the nuclear age with the completion of the Leach Nuclear Science Center in 1960. Over the years several physicists of renown have taught at Auburn. They include Dr. JessE Beams, and Dr. Paul McDaniel, who after leaving Auburn became director of research with the Atomic Energy Commission. The Department of Physics is a part of the school of Arts and Sciences.
