Biographical / Historical
In 1992, with a planning grant from the Ford Foundation, the Program for the Academic and Cultural Enhancement of Rural Schools (P.A.C.E.R.S.) was formed under University of Alabama’s Rural Service and Research (P.R.S.R.) program. Working with its co-sponsor, the Alabama Coalition of Citizens for Excellence in Small Schools (A.C.C.E.S.S.), the organization grew to encompass 29 rural schools. Serving as the director of P.A.C.E.R.S.,Auburn University Journalist professor Nan Fairly assisted in the creation of four community school newspapers.
