Biographical / Historical
Walter H. (Bert) Hitchcock is a retired professor of English at Auburn University (since 2008). He came to Auburn after earning a master’s degree from the University of Oregon and the doctoral degree from Duke University. He is a member of the Southern Humanities Council, the Alabama Council of Teachers of English, the Society for the Study of Southern Literature and serves on the advisory committees for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Southern Writers Project.
At Auburn, Hitchcock served as Assistant Professor and Chair of Freshman English (1971-1977); Associate Professor of English (1977-1984); Professor of English (1984-1999); Department Head (1977-1990); Scholar-in-Residence, Center for the Arts and Humanities (1990-1991); Acting Director, Center for the Arts and Humanities (1995-1996); and Hargis Professor of American Literature (1999-2008).
