Biographical / Historical
A native of Quitman, Georgia, Ray Groover attended the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, later Auburn University, from 1956 to 1961. During his time at Auburn, he played both golf and basketball. He is particularly known for his impressive basketball statistics and for scoring the 1960 game-winning shot against the University of Alabama, giving the Tigers their first SEC Championship in basketball. Auburn University honored Groover in 2009 with the Walter Gilbert Award. Groover is a veteran of the Vietnam War, a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia, and an accomplished physician. He currently lives in Birmingham, Alabama where he still practices medicine part-time.
