Scope and Contents

This collection consists of audio tapes and the transcript of an oral history interview with Dr. Hanly Funderburk conducted at his home in Montgomery, Alabama, by Dwayne Cox, Head of Auburn University Special Collections and Archives at the time. The interview covers Dr. Funderburk's career as chancellor of Auburn University at Montgomery (1969-1980), president of Auburn University (1980-1983), and president of East Kentucky University (1985-1998).

Biographical / Historical

Hanly Funderburk was born on June 19, 1931, in Carrollton, Alabama. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in botany from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in plant physiology from LSU. In 1961, Dr. Funderburk was employed by Auburn University as an Assistant Professor, and in 1967, he became the Assistant Dean of the Graduate School. In 1968, Funderburk was appointed Vice President of Auburn University at Montgomery and in 1978, AUM Chancellor. Dr. Funderburk served as president of Auburn University from 1980 to 1983 and as president of Eastern Kentucky University from 1985 to 1998.
