Biographical / Historical

Jean Baptiste Bory de Saint Vincent, b. 1778, d. 1846, was a French army officer, explorer, and naturalist. He sailed with (then abandoned at Mauritius) Nicolas Baudin's circumnavigation of the globe in 1800. After his return, he was elected as a correspondent of the Paris Museum of Natural History in 1803 and a correspondent of the French National Institute in 1808 (He became a member in 1834). He led the Commission scientifique de la Morée in 1829-1830 during the French military engagement in Greece and the Commission d'exploration scientifique d'Algérie between 1839 and 1842, during the French military takeover. Adele Dumont d'Urville was the wife of French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville. Durant St. Andre (sometimes Esprit Andre, Durant de Saint-Andre, or Baron de Saint-Andre) served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with his older brother and his son, Maurice.
