Scope and Contents

This collection contains a diary with varied notations. Some are brief religious notations or monetary descriptions. This diary also describes Hoyt's journey during the Civil War. In December of 1864, Hoyt became convinced he wanted to be a preacher, and was hoping the war would end. He notes the excitement in Portland when news of General Lee's surrender arrived in April 1865. Hoyt heard of Lincoln's assassination on April 15. By May 15, he is very desirous of returning home so that he may study and prepare to become a preacher.

Biographical / Historical

Gilman A. Hoyt was born about 1840, and he was a resident of East Machias, Maine. His parents were Charles and Abigail Hoyt. His siblings were Loreston G., Roswell M., Austin W., Leverett G., Norenzel E., Vienza B., Leonette A., Frederick, Rhodelia, and Emma. Gilman A. Hoyt was drafted on October 15, 1864 and graduated from Bangor Theological Seminary in 1866. The 1870 Census shows Gillman A., 30; Wife Martha 24 (Mattie) living with: A.W. (Abigail)- (Gilman's mother) siblings: Leavett, Fredric, Rodelia, Irene
