Scope and Contents

This collection includes a surveying transit owned by Clinton McClure, made by Gurley Engineering Instruments. McClure used this instrument extensively to locate landlines on the forest properties he managed and purchased. It also includes two timber maps created by McClure of southern Sumter and northern Choctaw counties in Alabama. One of these maps shows the location of McClure's timberland property, with individual trees marked.

Biographical / Historical

Clinton McClure was born in 1909, near Garland, Alabama, in Butler County. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute beginning in 1928 and earned a business degree. After graduating, McClure worked as a forester and lumber mill manager for W.T. Smith Lumber Company, first in Butler County, then in Linden, Alabama. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves, eventually reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel and seeing active service in Europe in World War II. After the war, he returned to Alabama to work as a forestry consultant under contract with Alison Lumber Company. He also managed the timber on his own extensive land holdings in Sumter County, Alabama. McClure died in 2002, at the age of 93.
