This collection includes correspondence, tournament programs, team rosters, schedules, score sheets, press releases, newspaper clippings, a transcript of an oral history interview, speeches, and photographs relating to Sandra Newkirk's research for an unfinished book on the history of women's athletics at Auburn University.

Biographical / Historical
Born on October 13, 1976, Sandra Bridges Newkirk received her B.S. degree in Physical Education from Purdue University, and two M.S. degrees from Indiana University in Recreation, and Guidance and Counseling. She served as a longtime coach and professor at Auburn University in the field of physical education. Hired in 1966 as a physical education instructor and intramurals coordinator, she founded the Auburn women's volleyball team in 1967 and coached the team until 1980. She was also Auburn's first Women's Athletic Director, founded the Alabama Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women and played a leading role in promoting women's athletics at Auburn University. She retired from the university in 2005, and died August 15, 2012.
