Biographical / Historical
The Green Gardeners Club of Auburn, Alabama, "came into being in 1946 as a result of an idea of Mrs. Osmo (Hulda) Smith and Mrs. T.C. Clark. These two ladies agreed they were too young to join the Perry Garden Club and decided to organize their own club. The object of the club is a mutual helpfulness in flower culture 'to aid in the extension of neighborhood and city wide projects'. The Green Gardeners selected as their main project and major goal maintenance of the Parkway on College Street in Auburn. Each year with the changing of seasons, the club has tried to add beauty to this main thoroughfare through Auburn. Membership was and is limited to 25 members. Meetings were held on the first Tuesday of the month at 3 o'clock-this was changed in 1975 to the third Tuesday at 3 o'clock. Some of the members in the club in 1946 were Hulda Smith, Mrs. T.C. Clark, Maryline Westenhaver, Catherine Brownfield, Myrtle Benson, Mrs. Charles Rush, Gretchen James, Jane Blake, Meriam James, Mabel Jockish, Minerva Curry, Thelma Thomas, and Betty Wittel. Hulda (Mrs. Osmo) Smith was the Green Gardeners' first president." Taken from the earliest Green Gardeners scrapbook, 1985.
