Scope and Contents

Collection of letters that Endicott wrote during the Civil War to his family and friends in Canton, Massachusetts. His mother, A. Matilda Endicott, was the most frequent recipient of William's letters. He also wrote to his sisters, Mary Alice and Marion, and to his friend, Mary F. Messinger, who received letters throughout the period of correspondence. Several other letters are included involving other friends or members of the family. Many of them refer to William, or contain related material to him. All of the letters are arranged chronologically. The letters are full of observations, poetry, drawings, sketches, social commentary, and accounts of camp life.

Biographical / Historical

Endicott was a teacher prior to his military service. Endicott entered into service at Boxford, Massachusetts as part of the 10th Masachusetts Battery on September 9, 1862. His unit's first assignment was to the Washington, D.C. area. William would serve at various locations in Northern Virginia and Maryland. His battery was captured in August of 1864. William was a prisoner for six weeks at Libby Prison and one week at Belle Island. On his way to imprisonment in Georgia, he and his company were unexpectedly paroled.
