The 46th Service Squadron was the Air Force maintenance team that serviced the planes for the Tuskegee fighter squadrons and was activated on January 15, 1941, at March Field, California and was assigned to the 12th Bomber Command, 34th Air Base Group of the United States Army Air Corp. In November of 1942, the 46th partook in the Tunisian Campaign, repairing and refueling British and American fighters. In May of 1943, the unit took part in the Pantellaria Invasion by salvaging and patching up damaged bombers at Hergla Airbase in Tunisia. After the fall of Sicily, the squadron set up base at Agrigento Airfield and later Ponte Olivio Airfield in August of 1943. By November, the 46th was at Catania Airbase, and before the end of the year, was ferried to Naples to Capodichino Airbase. The unit remained at Capodichino until June of 1944 when they relocated to Pomigliano Airbase. The next month had the unit camped at Montalto Airfield near Rome, and by the end of 1944 was at Tarquinia, where they remained until the conclusion of the war.
