Biographical / Historical
Joseph D. Hughes was born in Dothan, Alabama, and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1930, after which he received a law degree from George Washington University. He was a member of many professional and honorary organizations and was awarded several honorary degrees. He held various positions in the federal government, served in the U.S Army during World War II, headed the Japanese-American Joint Board in 1943-44, and eventually worked in the private sector in Pittsburgh, PA. Furthermore, he became a brigadier general in the Pennsylvania National Guard.
