John Lapsley Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the letters from John Lapsley to Sara Hudson, professor emeritus of English at Auburn University. The letters mainly deal with Lapsley's health and that of his various family members. The collection also contains caricatures drawn by Lapsley and newspaper articles about him.

Biographical / Historical
John Lapsley was born on July 4, 1914 in Selma, Alabama. He entered the National Academy of Design in New York City and worked as an assistant to Jean Charlot in fresco and Emilio Amero in lithography. He entered Birmingham-Southern College in 1936 and graduated in 1940. He served in the Air Force during World War II, worked as a visualizer-illustrator at Craig Field after the war, and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University in 1958. Lapsley taught art education for two years at Auburn University but worked at the Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base for the civil service and retired from there. He died in Selma on October 18, 2005.
